Flex-o-thene Plastics (Pty) Ltd. commenced business in 1971. It is a manufacturing company involved in the extrusion, printing, laminating and conversion of flexible plastic packaging material.
In 1985 Flexothene moved into bigger premises in a new modern factory in Phoenix Industrial Park. The business has grown consistently over the years and this necessitated an extension to the factory in 1989, a further extension in 1995 and the most recent extensions in 2003 and 2008.
Today the factory comprises of over 15000 square metres of area under roof which is many times the size of the original factory. Flexothene now employs over 300 people. Over the years new equipment has been purchased on a regular basis which has enabled the company to remain at the forefront of technology in the plastic packaging industry.
Although Flexothene still services a broad array of markets with its products, the focus has shifted away from clothing and retail packaging to industrial packaging, mainly in the food and beverage industry. The company has concentrated on sophisticated materials for automatic packaging lines and on high quality printing. The acquisition of a co-extrusion line in 1995 enabled the production of three layer films and further expanded this focus of specialised films and applications. Co- extrusion capacity has further increased throughout the years with the most recent addition being a 5 layer line commissioned in 2018. In 1998 the company acquired an 8 colour flexographic printer to broaden its markets to high quality printing. New equipment has been added on a regular basis in order to keep up with latest innovations and technology in the industry. Flexothene now has multiple flexographic printing presses (up to 10 colours), an 8 colour rotogravure press and state-of-the-art bagging, slitting and laminating machines.
Flexothene services a wide array of customers, from small independents to large multinationals such as Coca-Cola, Sasol, Procter & Gamble and Pioneer foods.
The company complies with world class manufacturing and hygiene standards. To this end Flexothene has ISO 9001 accreditation, ISO 22000 accreditation, and HACCP accreditation.
Flexothene is still a privately owned company run by a dedicated management team with strong emphasis on technical support and service. Flexothene complies with the requirements for Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) status.
